Asbestos Roof Removal
Asbestos cement roofing was common on Australian homes and commercial buildings built before 1990. If your roof contains asbestos, professional assessment and removal is the safe approach.
Asbestos Roofing in Australia
Corrugated asbestos cement roofing was widely used on Australian homes, sheds, garages, farm buildings and commercial properties from the 1940s through to the late 1980s. It was valued for its durability and fire resistance, and was one of the most common roofing materials of its era.
Over time, asbestos cement roofing can become weathered, brittle and prone to cracking. Lichen, moss and physical damage can all accelerate deterioration. As the material breaks down, it becomes more likely to release fibres — particularly if disturbed.
If you have an older roof and are unsure whether it contains asbestos, a professional assessment is the right starting point. Do not attempt to clean, repair or remove the roofing yourself until the material has been assessed.
Why You Should Not Disturb Asbestos Roofing
Pressure washing
High-pressure water can break down the surface of asbestos cement and release fibres into the air and surrounding area.
Cutting or drilling
Any cutting, drilling or grinding of asbestos cement roofing generates dust containing asbestos fibres.
Walking on the roof
Asbestos cement roofing can be brittle, particularly when aged. Walking on it can cause cracking and breakage.
DIY removal
Removing asbestos roofing without appropriate training, equipment and licensing is dangerous and may be unlawful. Professional removal is the safe and correct approach.
The Removal Process
Assessment
We inspect the roofing material and assess its condition. If testing is required to confirm the presence of asbestos, we can arrange sampling and laboratory analysis.
Planning
We plan the removal to suit the property, access requirements and any other trades involved. For residential properties, we advise on what to do before we arrive.
Removal
The work area is prepared and contained. Roofing sheets are carefully removed to minimise breakage, kept wet where appropriate to suppress dust, and placed directly into asbestos waste bags.
Disposal and clean-up
All asbestos waste is double-bagged, labelled and transported to a licensed disposal facility. The site is cleaned before we leave.
Our Scope of Work
Our asbestos removal services are carried out within the scope of our current licensing and capabilities. We will be clear with you about what we can and cannot do before any work is agreed. If your project requires services outside our scope, we will let you know.
